Put simply, a CUV is lighter and built on a car chassis while an SUV is heavier and built on a truck chassis. For the purposes of this page, we put SUVs and CUVs together and ranked them based on size. Overall, SUVs boast more space than a car and a better drive than a truck, so it's not hard to see why more and more Americans are choosing to buy them. With the growing interest, manufacturers have begun offering even more options to match the needs of drivers. While this means you're probably going to have a few different options with exactly what you're looking for, it also means there are a lot of vehicles to look though. Here is some basic information so you can get started finding the perfect SUV for your needs!
Subcompact SUV
Subcompacts are the smallest SUVs on the market. Usually they are slightly taller alternatives to subcompact cars, and generally both vehicles share the same platform. While they typically seat five, the back row is cozy and we don't recommend putting three full size adults in the back. Cargo room is limited and towing is not recommended on these small SUVs. Both Front Wheel Drive (FWD) and All Wheel Drive (AWD) models are available and many makes offer both in a single model.
Example Models: Hyundai Venue or Kona, Mazda CX-30, Nissan Kicks or Rogue Sport, Buick Encore and Jeep Renegade.
Compact SUV
The compact segment includes the most popular SUVs on the market. Compact SUVs are for shoppers interested in a higher driving position and roomier interior than a small sedan. They are larger than their subcompact siblings, generally seating two adults in the back seat comfortably, but again you'll find the back row snug for three full size adults. Cargo capacity varies greatly across the segment, so that is something to take note of when you are narrowing down your preferred vehicle. Compact SUVs tow up to 3,000 lbs and both FWD and AWD options are available.
Example Models: Acura RDX, Hyundai Tucson, Cadillac XT-5, Nissan Rogue, Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5 and CX-50, Ford Bronco Sport, Jeep Cherokee, GMC Terrain, Honda CR-V, Ford Escape and Buick Envision.
Midsize SUV
For many families, the midsize SUV provides the best balance of interior space, cargo room, safety and performance. They come in both two and three row models, though the third row is best suited for children due to size and accessibility. There is a lot of variety in power and performance and several offerings in the category are confident off-road machines. Towing capacity is up to 5,000 lbs with a towing package and AWD is available on nearly every model in the segment. While shoppers may compare a midsize SUV with one of the smaller large three row SUVs, the shorter overall length and user friendly cargo space usually put the midsize model on top unless they are maxing out the passenger space.
Example Models: Hyundai Santa Fe, GMC Acadia, Cadillac Escalade, Nissan Pathfinder and Murano, Acura MDX, Ford Edge and Bronco, Lincoln Aviator and Nautilus, Toyota Venza and Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Large SUV
These are also referred to as full size or three row SUVs, even though several midsize SUVs also feature a third row. These are the largest SUVs on the market and offer the most passenger and cargo room available. There is some variety within the category in terms of total space and towing capacity, but they all seat at least seven people and offer greater passenger and cargo room than a midsize SUV. The most powerful SUVs in this segment offer pick-up truck level towing capacity, but make sure to check before hitching up your heaviest trailer.
