With chip shortages and supply chain issues finding a new truck has become a real challenge. With so many new and used trucks to look at in one place it is helpful to find out more about the different available options before you come. We have prepared a complete breakdown of the different options for a truck, but here is a cheat sheet with some helpful tips for figuring out the right bed size, cab size and payload for your needs.

Truck beds come in three different lengths. They are short beds (averaging 5 feet 8 inches long), standard beds (averaging 6 feet 5 inches long) and long beds (averaging 8 feet long).

Truck payloads are split between light duty (with a maximum payload of 3,000 lbs and towing capacity of 12,000 lbs) and heavy duty (with a maximum payload of 6,500 lbs and towing capacity of 20,000 lbs).

Truck cabs come in four different configurations. These include Regular cabs (with no second row), extended cabs (the smallest second row with limited access), Crew cabs (four doors and a larger second row) and extended crew cab (with four doors and the largest second row). Most manufacturers have a different name for each of these sizes, so talk with your sales representative if you need help comparing these sizes across different makes.
